Brand Story

Koju was founded in the early Tensho era of Japan (around the end of the 16th century) by Yasuda Mataemon Minamoto Mitsuhiro, a descendant of the Seiwa Genji clan, in Kyoto, and was once the official incense supplier to the Imperial Palace.
The fourth generation was summoned by Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu and traveled between Sunpu and Edo, laying the foundation for his fame. In the Edo period, the eighth generation, Takai Juemon, inherited the title of Koju and became a renowned incense master in the tea ceremony world. His famous incense, such as "Chitose," was even presented to Emperor Kōkaku.
His book, "The Book of Perfume Making by the Kaoru Family of Kakujo Takai Juemon," has passed down the spirit of incense making and perfume blending techniques to this day.
